Congress Shall Make No Law…

From the fine folks over at Big Government I got word today of a new blog. Congress Shall Make No Law is brought to you by the Institute for Justice and is covering issues surrounding free speech.

Remember the First Amendment to the Constitution reads:

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.

Throughout this Countries’ 234 year history, Congress has attempted to stifle free speech to suit the needs of those in power (Albeit more so in the last 100 years).  Most of these ultimately wind up being struck down by the Supreme Court, in the true manner of checks and balances that the Constitution provides for in our three branches of Government.

With the advent of the Internet, these attempts are much more difficult (the Internet being an International entity, short of widespread censoring of international content, free speech would be difficult to block). While the FCC’s Net Neutrality proposal carries some prospect of stifling free speech on the Internet, it will face scrutiny just like all the others, and will ultimately be neutered to not interfere with First Amendment rights.

As the Progressive agenda continues to move forward (although this fall it looks to face one serious setback) you can expect that there will be many more attempts to undermine the Constitution, and with it the core of our Republic.

That being said, make Congress Shall Make No Law part of your daily blog reading list, and support those trying to protect the freedom that the First Amendment gives us.
