Where celebrating the reason for the season is accepted

Every year I take time away from my work to travel and see family in my hometown of Ottawa, Kansas for Christmas. This year is no exception.

It is here where the downtown business district is all aglow with Christmas Lights, the mayor lights the Christmas Tree and we start every December with a Christmas Parade.

When I was going to school here in the 1970’s and 1980’s it was not uncommon to sing Christmas Carols around a Christmas Tree at our school, nor was it uncommon for our school to have a Christmas Play (I actually played Santa Claus in the 4th grade).

Here we find a city that can come together, despite differences, and recognize that even with varied opinions we can celebrate. I enjoy going into the stores and being wished a Merry Christmas, and hearing Christmas music over the loudspeakers.

It is unfortunate that our litigious society has destroyed so many towns by attacking them over the beliefs of the many just to further the cause of the beliefs (or non-beliefs) of a few.

So for now, Merry Christmas!
